Freemantle

Church of England Community Academy Trust

Music

Intent:

At Freemantle music is for all. The curriculum aims to immerse our children in music through performing, composing and listening. All children are supported to enjoy and fully experience music. Music is a naturally inclusive subject and at Freemantle we ensure music from all cultures, eras and genres are explored and celebrated. Children are encouraged to develop a love for music that can be further explored throughout their lives.

Our curriculum is ambitious and designed to ensure all learners have the relevant knowledge and cultural experiences they need to succeed in life. Although the curriculum is spiral, it is sequenced to ensure each time a theme is revisited it is explored in greater depth. As the musical elements are interwoven throughout music, prior learning is always referred to and built on every lesson. By the end of Year 6, pupils will have studied the full curriculum and will have had many enriching experiences that will ensure they are ready to embrace music in KS3.

Implementation:

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is progressive. It encourages children to be able to know more, remember more and understand more. Children learn the building blocks of music (pitch, tempo, timbre, dynamic, structure, texture and duration), they learn to use them within their own work and to use them to analyse the great works during musical appreciation. Each time the elements are revisited they are strengthened and the skills are applied with greater accuracy. Vocabulary specific to music is taught and applied. Each lesson starts with a quickfire quiz to support remembering of key information. Music is an inclusive subject where all children can succeed. The music curriculum is enriched by workshops, theatre trips, performances in concerts, choir membership, singing assembly and peri instrumental lessons.

Impact:

Our children leave Freemantle with a secure understanding of the fundamentals of music. They have made a start on a lifetime of exploring and enjoying music.
