At Freemantle, we have a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) who is Laura Allen and our Deputy SENCO is Aaron Banning.
A SENCO plays a central role in ensuring that pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) receive appropriate support to access learning and participate fully in school life. The SENCO works closely with teachers, teaching assistants, parents and external professionals to identify pupils’ individual needs and coordinate suitable provision.
A key responsibility is overseeing the identification and assessment of children with SEND. The SENCO supports staff in adapting teaching, developing individual support strategies and monitoring pupils’ progress. They help ensure that the school follows the SEND Code of Practice and that the graduated approach of assess, plan, do, review is used effectively.
The SENCO also maintains accurate records, contributes to SEND policies and helps manage resources and specialist support. They may liaise with outside professionals, such as educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and local authorities.
An important part of the role is supporting and advising teachers, promoting inclusive practice and helping staff develop their understanding of SEND. The SENCO promotes an inclusive school environment where every child is supported to achieve their potential.
