Our first half term in Year 5

Our first half term in Year 5 has been challenging but fun and enjoyable.

Our topic this half term has been Time Travellers. We have learnt all about the history of Southampton with some of us learning about the walls, some learning about the Titanic and some learning about how Southampton was heavily bombed during World War 2. We also drew pictures of the Bargate in the past and the present. We used our sketching skills and also had the power to use oil pastels which we were able to blend.

Tom's Midnight Garden

In our class book, Tom's Midnight Garden, a young boy named Tom is forced to go to his aunt and uncle's house for the summer holidays as a result of his brother having measles. Whilst he is there, he discovers an old grandfather clock which one night strikes 13! He then goes on an adventure to discover a mysterious garden which hadn't been there before.

Did you know it was first published in 1958?

In English, we have been using Talk 4 Writing to write flashback narratives and diary entries. We based our flashback narratives around the video ‘The Piano’ which showed the story of an old man’s life. This helped us to understand how to make our own flashback stories.
We first learnt a diary entry from Goodnight Mr Tom before writing our own based around the book Tom’s Midnight Garden.

We are concentrating on using possessive apostrophes, a range of adverbials and emotive language in our work.

In Maths, we have been focusing on two of the four operations – addition and subtraction. Learning about place value first of all, helped us get through this half term a little bit easier.

We are ecstatic to be learning about the Tudors next half term.
